State Librarian Retires

Bill Asp and Nancy Walton

Congratulations to State Librarian Nancy Walton, who retires on August 1st. Library folks gathered at the Minnesota Department of Education on July 31st to reminisce, thank Nancy for her great leadership, and wish her well in her next life chapter.

Bill Asp (above) was the State Librarian who hired Nancy as the Director for what is now called the Minnesota Braille and Talking Book Library in Faribault (part of the State Library). Bill, who is now retired, was East Central Regional Library's  Director from 1967 to 1970.

Nancy has been seen at ECRL events many times, including the dedication of the bronze sculpture at Chisago Lakes last week. She is pictured below with MN Representative Bob Barrett, Sculptor Ian Dudley, and ECRL Director Barbara Misselt.

Congratulations, Nancy! You're a good library friend!!!

MnLINK - Your Gateway to Interlibrary Loan !

The MnLINK Gateway (www.mnlinkgateway.org) is your portal to a rich collection of resources.  With a valid library card, you can request materials from participating libraries in Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota, and Wisconsin.  Thousands of people now enjoy the benefits of interlibrary loan, but many may not understand how this service works.  Let's address some of the questions that have been submitted to ECRL staff:

"I can't log in.  Is something wrong with MnLINK?"

The database may be down for maintenance or experiencing a temporary technical problem.  Try again later or ask library staff for assistance.   Your library card must be current and valid.  Library staff can help you resolve card or registration problems.

"Can I request materials that are owned here?"

We do not interlibrary loan materials that are in the ECRL collection.  Instead, you should check Evergreen (the ECRL catalog) and place holds on materials there.  There is a link to Evergreen on our homepage (www.ecrlib.org).

"Why wasn't my MnLINK request filled?"

Most popular materials (bestsellers, DVDs) are in constant demand with long waiting lists.  Other items may be lost, damaged, or non-circulating.  If an item is unavailable, for whatever reason, your request will not be filled.  It's best to wait a week or so before placing another one (libraries are not required to fill requests for their materials).  ECRL staff are happy to accept suggestions -- if we don't own an item that you're interested in, we may purchase it for the ECRL collection!

"How many items can I request through MnLINK?"

You can have 20 active (pending or received) requests at any one time.

"I tried to request an item through MnLINK and received a strange message.  Why didn't my request go through?"

You may be at your 20-item limit, there may be a problem with your library card, or your fines may exceed $5.00.  Please contact library staff for assistance.

"Can I request materials from libraries in other states?"

Yes!  Materials in many North Dakota, South Dakota, and Wisconsin libraries can be requested through MnLINK.  You must login and change the "Current Profile" field to "ELM - Worldcat (shared)" for access to these library collections.   Some libraries, archives, and historical societies do not participate in MnLINK.  Contact ECRL staff for access to collections at the state historical societies in North and South Dakota, for example.

"What happens if I damage or lose an interlibrary loan item?"

Accidents happen, of course, but you are responsible for returning materials by the due date and in the condition in which they were sent.  If an item is lost or damaged, the lending library will send us a bill;  that amount (no more, no less) is then placed on your ECRL library card.  The amount can be significant, depending on the item and the lending library's policies.

"What materials are available through interlibrary loan?

Books, DVDs, music CDs, videos, audiobooks, microfilm, photocopies, magazine articles, maps, and (limited) reference material.  At present, eBook and eAudio materials cannot be requested through interlibrary loan.   ECRL has a growing collection of eBook and eAudio titles; you'll find links on our homepage (www.ecrlib.org).  And we welcome your suggestions!

Choosing the Right Guide for Your Trip

Whether you are traveling near or far, the East Central Regional Library is a good place to start when you are planning a trip.  If you are browsing, check out the 914 – 919 and 796 in the nonfiction section to find a variety of books about places to travel.  You can also do a catalog search by destination to pull up even more books. Make sure that your guide is 2010 or newer as travel information can change from year to year.  There are many travel series that you will find—including  Frommer’s, Fodor’s, Lonely Planet,  Rough Guides , Moon, Mobil Guide and Rick Steve’s to just name a few.  Each has their specialty and appeal for different types of travelers.

The Frommer’s and Fodor’s are the original guides.  They were mostly written for middle-aged and middle-class Americans traveling to Europe.   Arthur Frommer wrote the original Europe on $5 a Day.  Eugene Fodor wanted to introduce tourists to the people and culture of Europe in addition to the many historic sites.  These books offer background information on countries and what to expect in terms of language, weather, transportation, currency and phone and Internet connections.   You’ll also find maps and lists of attractions.  A valuable part of these guides is the list of places to sleep and eat.  Usually they are rated by quality and price according to stars or some other symbols.  Rick Steve’s also has a series of guidebooks about Europe that are easy to read.

For the younger and more adventurous traveler, the Lonely Planet and Rough Guides can be of help.  These guides are for backpackers and students that are looking for unique experiences.  Accommodations are very cheap and geared toward hostels and camping.  In The Rough Guide to Central American, several hotels in Honduras are listed as costing $14 to $16 per night.  Of course you may have to share a bath and definitely mingle with the locals.  Getting around is usually by bus.  You’ll find information about National Parks and hiking/ snorkeling and diving tips.  There are also notations about beautiful scenery, markets and night life.

For active travelers in the United States the Moon and Falcon guides are a good choice.  Moon, a publisher out of Chicago, has a series on metro areas.   Take a Hike Minneapolis & St.Paul includes hiking trails, maps and a description of the trail.  You’ll also get information about the difficulty level, how long the trail is and how long it takes to hike it.  Road Biking in Minnesota has similar information for bikers only it covers all of Minnesota.  There are other Falcon guides for paddling and mountain biking.

Traveling can be difficult, especially in foreign countries so it’s beneficial to have some idea of what you are getting into before you set off.  Guides can provide invaluable information as traveler’s budget their time and money.  Travel can also be among the most rewarding of life experiences, and your East Central Regional Library has the right guide to show you how to do it.
