SYNC eAudiobooks are back!

East Central Regional Library is participating in SYNC and you are invited to join us!  In April 2014, 751 eAudiobooks were checked out from East Central Regional Library's Digital Library.  Now, see what everyone is listening to and get the young adults in your life listening to eAudiobooks by joining SYNC!

SYNC is a program that gives away two complete eAudiobook downloads–a current Young Adult title paired thematically with a Classic title–each week to listeners ages 13+ each summer.  In 2014, 26 titles will be given away over 13 weeks from May 15th- August 20th

Titles are delivered through OverDrive Media Console, the same software/app you already use to access eBooks and eAudiobooks from ECRL’s Digital LibraryIf you don’t already have OverDrive Media Console you can download it here:  http://omc.overdrive.com/.  The titles are all in MP3 format, are Windows and Mac compatible, and are supported on most listening devices.

Each SYNC eAudiobook will be available for download for a period of 7 days, and once downloaded, they are yours to keep (i.e. never expire and can be listened to at any time).

The first week’s young adult title is WARP: THE RELUCTANT ASSASSIN by Eoin Colfer and the first week’s classic title is THE TIME MACHINE by H.G. Wells.  They are available for download now through May 21st. Check out the complete SYNC 2014 Summer lineup here: http://www.audiobooksync.com/sync-schedule/

Afraid you’ll miss a week? You can get text message alerts when the next SYNC eAudiobooks are available by texting syncya to 25827. You can also receive reminders by signing up for the email newsletter or by following the SYNC blog here: http://www.audiobooksync.com/about/what-is-sync/

ECRL Blue Ribbon Reader Named

It’s fair time and everyone wants to win a blue ribbon! This year, the Minnesota Summer Reading Program and Youth Services Committee decided to recognize a Blue Ribbon Reader from each public library region in the State of Minnesota.

Each of the 12 public library systems in Minnesota was asked to submit the name of one child (K-12) who has shown great enthusiasm in the summer reading program, participation in summer reading events and who deserves to be recognized for their summer reading achievements.

Each of the 14 branch libraries, two link sites and the outreach program in the East Central Regional Library system submitted the name of one such summer reading participant. The names of the children nominated from each were put in a hat and a winner drawn from the nominations. Irene Oquist representing our East Central Regional Library Outreach program was named the Blue Ribbon Reader for the ECRL region. Irene is 12 years old and lives in Braham. She received a four pack of MN State Fair tickets plus her very own “Star Reader” blue ribbon!

Tim Olson, ECRL Outreach Librarian, congratulates Irene on being chosen East Central Regional Library’s 2012 Blue Ribbon Reader!

Stuffed Animal Sleepover at the Chisago Lakes Area Library

14 lucky stuffed animal friends got to sleep over at the Chisago Lakes Area Library on July 17th as part of the DREAM BIG--READ Summer Reading Program.

First, children and their stuffed animals came to a special evening storytime.  We read sleepover stories such as Sophie and Sammie’s Library Sleepover and Time to Sleep Sheep the Sheep and had a bedtime snack.  When the children were ready to leave, we sang lullabies to our animals, and tucked them in for the night.

After the children left, the animals didn’t stay in bed for long.  They got up and wanted to play.  How FUN the library is at night! Here’s a peak at the mischief our special friends got into.

Playing games on the children's computer.
Hanging out by the picture books.

Coloring a BEAUTIFUL picture.

Relaxing with "Read It" the froggy who lives at the library!

"Look!  This movie is about a puppy, just like me!"

These animals decided to take a break from all the fun and help the librarians by shelving books.  Thanks guys!

When these animals grow up, they might want to work in the library.

Peek-a-boo!

"Can we go for a ride in this basket?"

Playing hide-and-go seek in the book drop.

Hanging out in the staff's breakroom.

Uhoh, the animals are hungry again.  They're getting into the librarians' food!

Settling down to watch a movie.

The next morning, the children came to our regular storytime at the library to pick up their friends.  Each child took home a photo book of their animal’s adventures.

Thank you to everyone who participated in the program!

It All Started in Minnesota

Summer reading has been around for a long time at East Central Regional Library. Vickie Sorn, our Youth and Community Services Librarian, has a list of ECRL’s summer reading themes going back to 1978*. Bionic Readout was the theme that year—must have been the year of the Six Million Dollar Man. The early themes, prizes and bookmarks were originated at the local level. In 1987, ten Minnesota regional library systems developed a summer library program for children, choosing a theme, creating artwork and selecting incentives that public libraries in the regions could purchase and use. This was the beginning of what’s known as the national Collaborative Summer Library Program and membership has grown to include libraries from all 50 states.

Paws to Read was the first Collaborative Summer Library Program.  According to Vickie, in the early years a graphic artist was hired. Librarians later agreed to choose an illustrator to do the thematic art. For example, Lane Smith, illustrator of The Stinky Cheese Man and The True Story of the 3 Little Pigs, did the art work for Wolfin’ down Books in 2001. Vickie has said that economics drives part of the program—what vendor can get the best prices and of course bringing in more libraries brings prices down.

Much of the work is done by multiple committees of librarians, of which Vickie has been a part of for many years. One committee puts together the big manual of ideas that librarians use as a resource throughout the summer. Other committees negotiate with the artist and still others work on the incentives. In recent years, Upstart has been the vendor that has worked with CSLP on the process of negotiation and offering incentives for the CSLP-selected nationwide theme. Since working with committees is a slow process, much advance planning is needed. That’s why librarians are buying summer reading prizes in December. Vickie said that the themes for summer reading have been chosen up to 2015!

This year author Brian Lies, is the illustrator for the theme, Dream Big Read. Look for graphics of stars and bats, cats, owls, beavers and alligators camping out and reading. Some of his books include Bats at the Beach, Bats at the Library and Bats at the Ballgame. ECRL Librarians have ordered hundreds of dollars’ worth of reading records, bookmarks, and incentive prizes, and have planned many activities and storytimes to keep children coming to the library over the summer.

Library News from Hinckley

"Look What’s Cookin’ at your library" took on a whole new meaning as the delicious smell of stone soup filled the library this past Wednesday, July 2. Of course the soup had lots more than just a stone in it. 10 vegetables, plus beef, pasta, and seasonings were prepared under the watchful eyes of volunteers Michelle Letourneau and Alyssa Prater. After hearing the story "Stone Soup", kids surrounded a table of work stations and were all peeling, chopping, dicing, slicing, grating, or julienning (is that a word?) It was a sight to behold! And then while the soup was cooking, they kept busy with other stories, games, and activities until it was time to sample the yummy results of their labors. Much thanks to those two gals for all the time they enthusiastically put into prep and production.

This week’s event on Wednesday, July 9 will be the "Happy Birthday, Minnesota" party where Lori Klar and Mindy Johnson will help the kids celebrate our state’s sesquicentennial. A special part of this celebration will be stories told of early Minnesota by guest storyteller, Steven Keillor. 150 years deserves a party and details will be in next week’s column.

Winners in the Teen level program for week three were Colton Blesi, Robert Bustamante, and Janiqua Robinson, while week four’s winners were Chris Carlstrom, Erika Winter, and Liz Sikkink. Congratulation to all of you and keep on reading and entering!!!

A new feature this year is a drawing for prizes for parents, or other adults who have been helping their kids participate in the summer reading program. It’s one way to say thank you for all the efforts they have to put in to enhance their kid’s library experiences. Prizes are from the Daily Dollar store, who generously donated a portion of them. Make sure you register when you’re here with your kids!

Holy scavenger hunts!!! The activity around the library gets intense as kids scurry around searching for items or pictures for the various hunts…and this week a new one will begin. This one appropriately has to do with the great state in which we are all fortunate enough to live in.
